We are Chris and Danya, a Canadian and Australian who are most comfortable with a trail underfoot or a plane ticket in hand. Our love of the outdoors and travelling has led us to seek adventure as part of our everyday life. We create videos of our trips and treks to share the awe and exhilaration of what the great outdoors has to offer. We hope that for some, it might inspire and help you prepare your own adventures, and for others that might not be able to get out there, we invite you to come along with us for the ride!
The Bibbulmun Track - Northcliffe to Walpole
Northcliffe to Walpole is one of the most varied sections of the Bibbulmun Track and also the most remote with no civilisation for numerous days. This section is also one of the most divisive with hikers. Seasonal flooding affects the area known as the Pingerup Plains, if you walk this section in winter or spring then there is a high chance you'll be spending days on end wading knee or sometimes waist deep in water. As you traverse the landscape, your day might take you from Karri forest to open plains to meandering along a river to walking along the coastline. Southbound walkers will experience the might of the Southern Ocean for the first time while northbound walkers will leave the dunes behind and enter the beautiful forests of the South West all the way up to Kalamunda.
Date hiked: August 2023

Awesome vid but, Ouraki?
What about laundry? On the Camino, we wash clothes every night.
Such a good watch thanks for that
I was here last week, did only the first part of the track. It was INSANELY beautiful. This is one of those places that you have to experience for yourself. Because film/pictures don't do it justice, even when it is this high quality footage.
Mate this is absolutely brilliant…. Thank you so much for your time and advice
Hi Chris & Danya, great videos, I wonder if you guys would make a gear and camera settings reviews in the future? Thanks
Hi Chris and Danya, When was this vlog shot? First week of November or whatever? I'm planning a trip in autumn 2025 and want to try and pick the right moment in the calendar.
You guys are so lucky to hike this mesmerizing beauty. No words is enough for me how much I have enjoyed your video while watching it. Thanks for entertaining me.
cool vid. see any animals?
Just the usual NZ birds
This is stunning! How far from the hooker trail to the hut? We can just follow the orange pole all the way?
Thanks Chris and Danya, beautifully filmed, my favorite, next time you’re in the Nelson Lakes, might I suggest the Cupola - Gunsight route. From Chris and Sonya.
Will keep that in mind for next time, thanks 😊
Thank you. Fanastic video !!!
Thanks for watching!
Hey Chris and Danya. Thanks so much for the video and it is so inspiring. It is very detailed and will help me on my hike in August. Cheers
Thanks for watching and have a wonderful time!
Thanks Chris, the video was great! We are from Australia and have just been to South Is NZ. We have done the Hooker Valley Trail while overthere and now like this one on Caples River when next we go over. How many kilometers did you walk before you came back packrafting? Thank Marli & David (Brisbane)
From Greenstone Carpark it's about 9 km (2-3 hours) to Mid Caples hut. Just before the bridge to the hut there is a path down to the river and is a good spot to put in Have a wonderful time!
It took me years to get somewhat used to walking in Australia after growing up in NZ!
I can imagine! Wandering through the tall grass always gets me. We're moving to Canada today and that is going to be quite the adjustment 😅
hi @ChrisandDanya, i plan to do this trek but there is a lot of test like when you have to pass into a mountain like in your video ?
Not too much incline throughout the trail. I'd recommend taking a look at the maps which will give you an idea of the terrain
And which itinérary you does ?
@kyli8742 we did a custom itinerary and mixed a few together. We have another video about the logistics for planning/booking the Kumano Kodo that you might find helpful
I can
Beautiful content. What month did you go?
Hiked the trail in the middle of November
Thanks. I must have said, “wow,” 40 times. Simply superb. I watched another video of the same trip and the comparison with yours is…. And so interesting to get the jet boat and helicopter. It might be possible for me to do it that way. And the weather over the pass, so lucky.
I believe the Jetboat wasn't too expensive. The helicopter is expensive if you book it on a day they aren't already going out there. However we called them and found out when they were already dropping people off, so we got cheaper rides back. Definitely worth it!

I was a ranger there at Fox 13 years ago now. I was young and so fit, my housemates were rangers too and we used to see who could summit Mt Fox the fastest on our days off, I did sub 2 hours. The girl was a machine and did it 1hr 20. Back then you could walk right up to the glacier on a trail, we used to maintain the path for the visitors. Were talking big unfit tourists so it had to easy going. We would set the biggest boulders we could budge for the river crossings, then a big rain would come down those steep valleys and toss them away like they were nothing. Drank the glacier melt water everyday, delicious.
Sounds like a wonderful time! Summiting Mt Fox in 1.3 hours is impressive stuff! Would have been cool to experience walking up to the glacier. Understandable why you can't these days though. Thanks for watching!
Great stuff guys - will have to check out Dog Pool next time we're riding to Yirra Kartta on the MB (its only 9km away). Thanks for the heads up :)
It's a beautiful spot!
Yeah, the safety of New Zealand’s bush does spoil you. Beautifully filmed, fortunate you can both experience this together. 👋
Nothing like a deep cool forrest Except maybe a 🍺🍺 at the end
Gotta work for it!
Loved the video. It was a very memorable part of the track for us. What happened to "hot potato day"? We always say it with you guys in mind 😂
Oh no we forgot to say it! We definitely got some hot potato in Walpole though 😅
@ChrisandDanya PHEW!! Glad you didn't forget 😉😂
@pamtodd1525 every day can be hot potato day 😂
Check your reel around 10:28 - 10:33 you have a lovely friend on the right (ground level) 🐍
I can't find him! 🐍
Another superb video, thank you very enjoyable.
Thanks Brian!
Barbara O’Neil onions for cough
All great info, but the real question is - Where did Danya get that stick? That's a good stick!
At the rest stops/towns along the track they have bamboo hiking sticks you can borrow during your walk! Just return them at the end ☺
Thankyou so much for filming this tramp. I so loved seeing 'hinterland' I don't have the stamina to reach. So I appreciate very much you fitter folk who can go and have the generosity to film as well. I'm a Kiwi, and I love my land. Thankyou, thankyou, Kia Kaha! 😘 Ellen
Thank you for the kind words Ellen! Happy to take you along our adventures ☺
Wow want see kiwis or real Aotearoa birds but film and hapoy sea dears? They also imported for western happy hobbies and destroy NZ bird wild!
These are whitetailed deer and are the only population in the Southern Hemisphere. Their population is mostly kept under control from hunters. It was a pretty scene so I filmed it, don't see what the big deal is 🙄
we did this in May many days were at Zero or Minus 2 , frezzing cold but the best ride ever, great places and folks on trail, ( only us mostly) stayed at the Pubs along the rail fantastic.
Sounds like a fantastic trip Martin! Definitely a special spot of NZ 😊
Thanks for the video. Easy to understand for a future booking
Thanks for watching Steve!
So helpful! Thanks
Thanks for watching! 😊
Hi Chris and Danya, I am planning to go to Angelus hut the end of this year. I am so excited and your video is very helpful to get detailed information for the track. Thank you!
Have a wonderful time! Glad the video could help a bit 😊
New Zealand has never seen a road bike.
I love all of your videos but really enjoyed this one. Something a bit different from the typical hiking ones. It was cool to see Chris’s Mum join you on your adventures.
Thank you so much! Was definitely a special trip to spend with my mother 😊
Thanks. It’s a bitter sweet experience watching this as I did this I think around age 21. It was pretty effortless back then. Climbing up the ridge, a flock of maybe 20 Keas were flying overhead. It was a bit nerve racking. I doubt such a thing would happen now as the great birds are in decline. I was on a mountaineer’s course. We camped up there and back then I was really into meditation and remember sitting in the snow and having a meditation and actually left my watch by mistake at the campsite. And after so many years, I’m meditating again. Enjoy your strength. The years go by fast. I’m not over the hill yet having done the Milford Track twice in 2019 and 2023 and watching your beautifully crafted videos is really inspiring me to return to some of these places. All the best
Sounds beautiful Patrick. Would have been quite a different track back then I believe! Well done tackling the Milford twice in the last few years, definitely well worth the effort! Hope you have many more years of hiking/walking ahead of you 😊❤️🙏
Thanks Chris or Danya. I’ll have to watch some more of your videos. Some of the places are most likely beyond my ability but hopefully I’m wrong. You certainly made the most of your time in these places. I think it’s possible Danya grew up near where I live in Melbourne. There’s something addictive about being in the mountains, you just want more and more and are sort of driven. Another addiction.😃 Thanks for making the effort.
Thanks for the continued support Patrick, we really appreciate it! Danya grew up in Western Australia so she grew up as a beach girl, but her mom is from Vancouver Canada (where I'm from), so she's got mountains in her blood! 😅 I did a lot of camping growing up in Canada, but didn't get into hiking/backpacking until we moved to Australia. We're moving back to Canada in a week and really looking forward to exploring some new mountains and valleys!
Hi Chris, So nice of you to write back. I’ve been meaning to watch your Milford Track video tonight. Wow. You’re from Vancouver. Such a beautiful place, I was talking about Canada this morning as my Wife’s colleague had poped over and she has a Canadian partner and her brother is studying in Vancouver. It’s one of the world’s paradise places as well as the Banff to Jasper trip. I’d love to return for another trip to Canada. And Danya from the West. Such a phenomenally beautiful part of Australian. And a great many people from the eastern states have not visited it. I have a friend in WA who has been “Over East, “ just once in her life. You went everywhere in NZ and so many cool places in Australia. Well done. And yes, it’s driving me crazy at the moment with watching NZ tramping videos and the fact that 38 years have passed since I did the Travers / Sabine. Time just goes so fast and faster as you get older too. Best wishes on your journey to Canada and good luck navigating the crazily experience world you’ve inherited and from the likes of me who had it easy. Sorry.
Thanks for the kind words Patrick, hope you get the chance to hit the trails again soon ☺
Really enjoyed watching. Thanks.
Thanks for the continued support!
Thanks so much Chris and Danya. Really enjoyed it. Such beautiful photography and interesting commentary too. It looked pretty tricky to climb Mt Owen. Did you find the route to take was easier being there?
Thanks again Patrick! The route up was pretty easy to follow, but coming down it was easy to take the wrong track which would lead you to a dead end; still pretty easy overall though. Not a bad place to spend more time though, the rock formations are beautiful 😊
Beautiful! A hidden gem indeed
Definitely worth it if you're ever in the area!
Beautiful filming. Wise decision making. We turned back on the Kepler during very strong winds and rain and returned to Luxmore Hut for a 2nd night. We were the only ones who did. The next morning we continued and had beautiful clear skies and snow on the tops.
That would have looked some beautiful the next day! That 2nd day on the Kepler is so exposed when crossing the ridge, you definitely made the smart and correct decision, well done 😊
We love all your beautiful film and photography. thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching Monique! 😊
Thanks. So inspiring. It’s an area I visited and walked in around 1986. And hopefully I might get to do some again in the future.
That's so cool, I can't imagine what it must have looked like back then! Hope you get the chance to return one day 😊
Thanks. It’s great to be sharing the journey and brilliant photography and interesting commentary too.
Thank you Patrick!
Do you think you could’ve gone up and back in a day
I think you definitely could! It's very steep but you are only going a short distance. Definitely worth staying at the hut and exploring the glacier though! Wish we did that when we were there
Love your work! Subscribed!
Thank you 🙏❤️
Thank you for providing the packing list on microsoft word. Most helpful. Happy adventuring :)
Hope you have a great adventure!
Love your videos, this one I'll be doing next Feb so I was pretty excited to watch this.
That's awesome, you'll have such a great time!
Beautiful I am planning to do this track at the end of this year 😊 Thank you for sharing.
Hope you enjoy the it! Would love to return and complete the whole track one day 😊
